Harbour City Photography Club

The Harbour City Photography Club is comprised of a diverse group of individuals who are passionate about photography and eager to learn more through education and sharing of ideas.  We extend a warm welcome to all who enjoy photography regardless of their level of expertise.  We meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month.  One meeting features a keynote speaker; the other focuses on education.  Membership fees are $50 (individual); $65 (family); $10 (student).  Visitors are welcome to attend and are asked to make a small donation of $5.  Please visit our website www.hcpclub.ca for detailed information about upcoming events.

Nanaimo Youth Choir

Nanaimo Youth Choir, a community choir for youth aged 5 to 19 years, was founded by Artistic Director, Marian Smith in 1992.  The choir is a division of the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music.  There are two groups within the choir program, a Junior Choir for children 5 through 14 years  with little or no musical experience, and the Concert Choir for girls and boys with unchanged voices.  This group is an auditioned group of choristers with  some previous musical experience, through choir or private instruction.

In 2012 and 2014they have travelled to Eugene, Oregon to participate in the Pacific International Children’s Choral Festival (PICCFEST) .  The choir performs at community and competitive events and has received numerous awards including:
-Six time consecutive provincial winner in the BC  Festival of the Arts
- Second place winner at the Canadian National Music Festival 2012
- Civic Merit Awards to celebrate each year they have won the Provincial competition.

In 2011, Marian Smith was also honoured to receive a City of Nanaimo Cultural Award for her work in the community and with the Nanaimo Youth Choir.

This year, the Nanaimo Youth Choir has been given a once in a lifetime opportunity by Distinguished Concerts International New York to perform in Carnegie Hall with children’s choirs from other parts of the globe, in a world premiere performance with conductor and composer Cristian Grases.  The June 12,  2016 performance will include orchestral accompaniment with students of Juilliard School of Music and other professional orchestral players.
To cover the costs for this exciting choral endeavour,  the choir is launching a fundraising campaign to raise $60,000.00.
The choristers love to sing and perform and many lifelong friendships are formed within the groups as they strive for excellence in choral singing.
